A wee bit of background……..
I graduated with BSc.(hons) in Geography from Edinburgh University in 1984 and a diploma in cartography from Glasgow University in 1985.
After 4 years working as a cartographer with the Forestry Commission, I began working freelance. Based in Ayrshire, I worked on mapping for Scottish Nuclear, Strathclyde University, the Forestry Commission and Orienteering Clubs.
In 1995 I moved to Inverness and became involved with Wendy Price Cartographic Services. This was an invaluable experience in many aspects of map design and production. Thank you Wendy.
I have been working on my own as Helen Stirling Maps since 2006 and have been involved in a wide range of mapping work (book illustrations; tourism promotion; street maps; web maps; display boards; walk maps; cycling maps and more).
My work on a map of the City of Inverness won the Society of Cartographers Wallis Award 2007 for excellence in mapping.
The mapping I produced for Moray Council's Health Walks publication won the British Cartographic Society Stanfords Award for Printed Mapping 2008.
I have been involved in producing Active Travel Maps (mainly for HITRANS). The Black Isle by foot, bike, bus and train (produced for Transition Black Isle) won the Society of Cartographers Wallis Award 2015 for excellence in mapping.
